The Preventative

The Ol’ Pull-By-Hand

It’s manual. It’s cheap. It’s arguably the best method.

Grab a fork or a narrow trowel. Get under the weed. The goal isn’t to snap the stem, which is useless, it’s to extract the whole root. If you leave a shred of root behind perennial weeds will laugh at you and grow right back.

Soak the ground first. Wet soil surrenders easier than dry dirt. You don’t need special equipment just your hands and some patience.

Vinegar. But Not the Salad Kind

You need horticultural vinegar. Not the 5% acetic acid stuff sitting next to the balsamic in your fridge. That’s too weak. It’ll just insult the weed.

Horticultural vinegar runs between 20% and 30% acidity. That stuff dehydrates plants. It sucks the moisture out of their tissues until they turn brown and die.

Works best on babies. Young weeds. Don’t bother spraying established invaders, they’ve got too much life left in them. And wear gloves. That acid will eat skin if you let it hang out.

Boiling Water

Got a kettle? Good.

Boil a pot of water. Pour it directly on the weed. It acts like a thermal herbicide. The heat shocks the plant cells so hard they stop working.

Make sure you get the roots. Just scalding the leaves won’t save you if the root survives.

It’s cheap. It’s natural. It’s also dangerous. Be careful. This kills before they set seed which is usually what you’re trying to achieve.

Blast It Off

Neglected patio? Tight spacing? Weeds embedded deep?

Call in the power washer.

This isn’t for regular Tuesday maintenance. This is for reclamation. The force of the water will blow the weeds right out of the joints. But here’s the catch you have to go through the mud afterwards and pick up every blasted piece of weed you want it to disappear.

Use a low setting. You want to kill plants, not blow your pavers apart into rubble. Home improvement stores rent the big guns. It’s messy. It’s effective. You might even clean the pavers at the same time.

Burn It Down

Fire. Obviously risky.

Take a propane torch and run the flame over the leaves. Keep moving until the foliage turns black. You’re collapsing the cell structure same principle as boiling water but with less cleanup of muddy sludge.

Wind? No torching. You’ll burn the neighbor’s hose. Or yourself. Or the house.

Stay alert. Watch what you’re pointing. It works. Just don’t become an arsonist.

Corn Gluten. The Preventative

Stop weeds before they start. That’s the dream.

Corn gluten is a natural pre-emerg herbicide. It doesn’t stop seeds from sprouting, actually they can still germinate, it stops them from putting down roots. No roots means no plant. Simple biology.

But you have to time it right.

Know when weeds like to germinate. Apply the corn gluten just before that window. And check the weather.

No rain.

If it rains within days of application the corn gluten washes away. The roots form. The weeds survive. You have to get lucky with the forecast.

Paver joints are trouble.
