A standard heat gun sold at your local hardware store will do. Usually under $50. This is an inexpensive way to melt solder or reattach loose parts. But don’t let the low price fool you into thinking this is a harmless game.

Using a heat gun for electronic work can be dangerous if you are not prepared. Understanding the process and taking basic precautions can make the difference between a successful repair and a toxic finger burn.

Prepare before connecting the power source

Most heat guns are around 1000 watts. Some even have a temperature control. Most don’t. Because of this lack of precision, safety equipment is more important than the tool itself. Safety glasses are required. Heat-resistant gloves are required. Tweezers or other nonflammable tools are needed to hold these small parts in place.

“Please note that some solders contain lead and can produce highly toxic fumes and vapors when heated to extreme temperatures.”

Lead is still common in older electronic devices. It evaporates when heated during reflow soldering. These fumes are highly toxic. There is a risk of lead poisoning by inhalation. Know the symptoms. These include nausea, headache and stomach pain.

Ventilation is non-negotiable. Please open the window. Turn on the fan. Do not work in a closed room. If possible, avoid exposure to smoke completely.

Stabilize the board

Blow lots of air with the heat gun. That’s their job. This is also your biggest enemy during electronics repair. If you don’t hold everything down, small components will blow off the board before the solder melts.

This technique is ideal for repairing broken connections on populated board. It also works when adding or removing new connections. Pay attention to loose parts. Tape them down if necessary. Attach them so that the air flow does not disturb the project.

Reflow soldering process

Adding one new component is very easy.

Apply solder paste to the pads of the component.

Place the parts in place. Use heat-resistant tweezers for attachment.

Point the heat gun towards the solder paste.

Observe that the solder become shiny and liquid into a liquid.

This takes less than a minute. If it takes longer, you’re probably doing it wrong or the gun is too far away.

Once the components are in place and the solder looks good, stop heating. Leave the board alone. Allow to cool for at least 10 minutes. If you do it too fast, you might break your new joint or burn your fingers.

This is easy to fix. cheap tools. Basic safety. Just don’t forget about ventilation.

You don’t need a $100 hot-air rework station to fix a damaged circuit.
